New Curator Announced

3 March 2015

The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is delighted to announce the appointment of Lucy Hammonds to the position of Gallery Curator.

Currently Curator, Art and Design Collections at MTG Hawke's Bay, Hammonds was born in Auckland and trained in the innovative Critical Studies programme at Unitec School of Design. After a period in the commercial gallery world, she emerged in the early 2000s as a curator with wide ranging interests beyond the expected aspects of contemporary New Zealand art, including craft/object making, design and fashion history.

Director Cam McCracken says: ‘We are delighted that Lucy Hammonds will take up the role of Curator, Dunedin Public Art Gallery. She brings a unique and welcome mix of skills to the role, is an excellent communicator and her comprehensive interest in the Arts – including contemporary art, the decorative arts, fashion, craft and objects is well-suited to the Gallery’s collection.”

Hammonds is a prolific writer, with major publishing projects including Architecture of the Heart (MTG Hawke's Bay, 2013) and The Dress Circle - New Zealand Fashion Design Since 1940 (Random House, 2010), a finalist in the 2011 New Zealand Post Book Awards.

Lucy Hammonds will take up her role at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in mid-May 2015.
