250,000 VISITORS... The most popular year EVER at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery

13 August 2014

There have been more visitors to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in the past twelve months than in any other year since the Gallery first opened in 1884.

The 250,000th visitor to Gallery walked through the doors at 11:25am on Friday 20 June. This is 50,000 (20%) more visitors than recorded at the same time last year.

The previous 12 month record of 220,365 visitors was set in 2011.

The swell in attendances began soon after the Gallery’s free child-dedicated area Playspace was opened and continued to increase with people coming repeatedly to view and experience exhibitions with interactive components such as Seung Yul Oh’s Moa Moa and Olafur Eliasson: The Cubic Structural Evolution Project.

Other exhibitions that drew large crowds were Not All White (an exhibition of wedding dresses by Dunedin designer Tanya Carlson), HOTERE CULBERT, Gregory Crewdson’s photographic exhibition In a Lonely Place and Wonderwall: Works from the Collection.

The Gallery records visitations from 1 July to 30 June each year and a clear increase in the 13/14 year’s visitation began early in October 2013 and grew steadily from there.
