Early Settlers

The Early Settlers
Learn about the why the early settlers wanted to come to New Zealand and the difficulties they had to overcome, through viewing artworks, film footage, pictures and diagrams. You’ll be surprised how social studies can come to life at the Art Gallery. Students will respond with their own artwork. Choose from the workshops below. This topic ties in well with ‘early settlers’ education programmes at the Otago Settlers Museum.

A New Land        Level 1-4
Show a scene of the early settlers sailing to New Zealand or getting established in the new land.

A Meeting of Cultures        Level 3-4
