Art History

The Gallery is a valuable resource for those secondary school students studying art history. There is always a wide range of works on display and these can be supplemented with clips from our extensive art video collection. A video list of over 100 titles with brief descriptions of content is available on request.

14th Century Italian Panel Painting        Level 5-8
The main feature of this visit is seeing the wings from a 14th century triptych painted in egg tempera with gold leaf.

Modern New Zealand Art        Level 5-8
Keep an eye on the exhibition programme which often is ideally suited to cover topics such as Representational Art in landscapes, figure studies and portraiture, Expressionism and Abstraction, The Women’s Art Movement and Feminist Art and Contemporary Maori Art.

Your Own Selection        Level 7-8
It may be possible for an artwork from our collection to be placed in the auditorium for in-depth study by a group of secondary school students. This would be accompanied by an introductory talk. A list of artists and works is on our data-base and we can access this on request.

Unreal!        Level 1-5
This is an introduction to Surrealism with a look at works where imagination is a key ingredient. Try the fun collage workshop using magazine picture cut-outs to create a dream-like world where just about anything can happen.

Shock Your Socks Off!        Level 3-5
This is a quirky approach to help students understand the impact that Cubism had on the art world of the early 20th century. Students will be in for a shock with a still life workshop that, in a similar way, takes a radical approach to portraying reality.
